Why Progressive Weakness Matters
Cervical radiculopathy can cause pain that travels from the neck into the shoulder or arm, along with numbness, tingling, or loss of strength. You may notice that gripping objects, lifting an arm, or completing routine tasks has become more difficult. Changes in hand coordination can also be important.
Many cases improve without surgery, so an MRI or nerve study is not automatically needed for every episode of neck or arm discomfort. Weakness that is new, persistent, or getting worse deserves closer attention because it may point to continuing nerve compression.
The Physical Exam Comes First
We compare muscle strength, test reflexes and sensation, and look at the pattern of what you are feeling. These findings can help identify which nerve root may be involved and whether another condition could be producing similar problems.
When more information is needed, an MRI can show discs, nerve roots, and other structures in the cervical spine. Electrodiagnostic testing, including electromyography, may be useful when the source of numbness or weakness is unclear or when a peripheral nerve condition needs to be distinguished from a problem originating in the neck.
When Additional Testing Can Guide Treatment
Testing does not prevent weakness on its own. Instead, it gives our team more information when the exam or course of the problem suggests that a nerve may be under ongoing pressure. Those findings can help determine whether continued nonsurgical care makes sense or whether surgery should be considered.
Depending on the cause, spinal level, and anatomy involved, options may include anterior cervical discectomy and fusion or cervical disc replacement. A herniated disc is one condition that can lead to cervical nerve compression, but treatment depends on the individual findings rather than the diagnosis alone.
